Barbie Deen, Mending a Shoulder and Restoring Mobility.
I am an outgoing, people person – the type of person who is active and always on the move. So, when a shoulder and back injury began dominating my life, I had a hard time being around people. As much as I wanted to block out the piercing pain, I could not get past it. The day I could not get out of bed and walk to the breakfast table, I knew the only way I could get better was by seeking professional medical help. I needed a physician to get me quickly back to my life.
I was a patient at Florida Medical Center, a campus of North Shore, where Dr. Fawwaz Mohiuddin is on-staff. I had a great experience at Florida Medical Center with the doctor, the nurses and staff. I was sent for a follow-up appointment with Dr. Mohiuddin for my shoulder and back problems due to overcompensating for my bad shoulder. Due to my loss of mobility, I was down and a little depressed. During my office visit, Dr. Mohiuddin really listened. Dr. Mohiuddin had a positive effect on me and really lifted my spirits. His heart is in it and he is passionate about what he does, people with his qualities – you can tell they enjoy what they are doing. He fixed my back too.
Dr. Fawwaz Mohiuddin wasted no time in pinpointing the pain to my rotator cuff. He put me at ease, ordered an X-ray and took his time to show me what was causing my pain. He explained the way he would approach the treatment and asked my opinion, asking first if I was okay with that option. I remember Dr. Mohiuddin being so sincere. He treats me like I’m not just a name or number on his chart. I really feel he took his time with me. Dr. Mohiuddin decided a physical therapy rehabilitation program would be better for me than shoulder surgery.
My son in California broke his collarbone. I told Dr. Mohiuddin because he is an orthopaedic surgeon I trust. He genuinely cared about my son’s recovery and even offered to take a second look at his X-ray. Dr. Mohiuddin is a great resource to have for sports medicine.
He placed me with a physical therapist that I like. Dr. Mohiuddin told me over and again it’s important to go to physical therapy. He was never quick to keep me medicated. Today, my shoulder is doing really well. It doesn’t hurt me at all and feels just as good if not better than before. I am happy to say that I will not have to take pain medication anymore for my shoulder or my back.
Rewinding back to my injury, through a process of elimination, Dr. Mohiuddin and I found that I hurt my shoulder while I was helping my mom put her walker into the trunk of my car. I folded it back and noticed I was struggling and the seat seemed really heavy. Pushing the seat back aggravated my shoulder injury. Dr. Mohiuddin fixed me. My injured shoulder is now stronger than my other shoulder. That is pretty impressive! He is a doctor I would trust with my own mom.
My times with Dr. Mohiuddin have been very positive experiences. I am very proud to have Dr. Mohiuddin as my physician. He genuinely cares, listens and answers all the questions I asked about my shoulder. After seeing Dr. Mohiuddin at his office in Fort Lauderdale, I was so happy with my care that I went home and wrote an online patient review championing Dr. Mohiuddin. I was very pleased to do that. Anything I need in terms of orthopaedic, I know I can count on Dr. Mohiuddin. I really found a great physician. I’m not just a name or number on his chart!
David Calafell, Professional Bodybuilder.
I have a tremendous amount of adrenaline and excitement flowing through my body while on stage at a bodybuilding competition. It is total exhilaration. I have been like this since I started training at the age of 6, when I became involved in martial arts. Today, I have a lot of fun with my fellow bodybuilders. I always tell everyone good luck, but when I step on stage I show no mercy.
In high school and college, I played football and basketball. After graduating college, I began to get into bodybuilding. I took it very seriously. In my first big competition, I took second place in the Middleweight Novice Division of the Southern States Championships in Fort Lauderdale – the biggest amateur bodybuilding show in Florida. My son David mimics my workouts while doing flexing and posing routines in the mirror. He thinks I am a super hero.
Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, I suffered a freak injury while helping my family move furniture. The setback was a heavy blow to my bodybuilding career and life as I knew it. I was lifting one side of a heavy dresser with another family member when somehow a stroller got lodged underneath. I took a step, the stroller hit my shin causing me to stumble towards the ground and at the last second I reached my hand out to brace the fall. My arm snapped like a rubber band. It felt like someone stabbed a knife in my arm. I was rolling around on the ground in pain.
I knew immediately I had torn my bicep – it looked deformed. My wife Lellany drove me to a nearby hospital as I held my arm tightly. There, an X-ray was done to confirm I had torn my muscle.
I began my own online research for orthopaedic surgeons in South Florida and came across Dr. Fawwaz Mohiuddin, an orthopaedic surgeon with Tenet Florida Physician Services. I decided on Dr. Mohiuddin because of his background: he did his fellowship at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, where he worked with the Miami Heat as part of their physician team. He had sports medicine experience with a lot of professional athletes including pro football and hockey players.
Right away I began to like Dr. Mohiuddin. He was one of the most patient, calm, and confident surgeons I have seen in my life. Dr. Mohiuddin took the time to explain the distal bicep tendon repair. I met with him at his office and two days later he performed the surgery. Dr. Mohiuddin tied a medical button to the end of the bicep tendon, drilled a hole through the forearm bone, pulled the tendon through and snapped the button closed on the other side. The tendon fused to the bone making it stronger than before. The procedure was done at Florida Medical Center, a campus of North Shore in Fort Lauderdale where Dr. Mohiuddin is on staff, and it took him about an hour and a half to complete. The nurses and service were excellent in the hospital. Even better yet, I left the hospital the same day.
I did some of my rehab here at Florida Medical Center. In the beginning, it was painful. I put all of my trust in Dr. Mohiuddin and in the process, listening to everything he told me. My rehab ranged from electro stimulation in the hospital to using grip strength in sand buckets during rehab. I started with two lb. dumbbells and slowly regained my strength until I could get back in the gym. It felt great being back in the gym. At first, I was benching just the bar, even though everyone remembers how much I used to lift.
All the patience has paid off and Dr. Mohiuddin is a life saver. After a few months, my strength started returning and everything Dr. Mohiuddin told me came to fruition. I stayed focused, I stopped worrying and I trusted the process. I am getting my strength back while training for upcoming bodybuilding competitions and that feels great.
